I'm an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Southern Methodist University. Before coming to SMU, I was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The Political Theory Project at Brown University. I hold a Ph.D. in Government from Georgetown University and an M.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John's College, Annapolis.
I have research interests in political theory, the history of political thought, liberalism (French & Anglo-American), political economy, suffrage, and citizenship, focusing on themes of political inclusion and exclusion and the history of 'the social question.' My work has been published or is forthcoming in Political Theory, Modern Intellectual History, Polity, The Tocqueville Review, and The Review of Politics.
I'm currently finishing work on a book titled Democracy Tamed: French Liberalism and the Politics of Suffrage that explores French liberals' responses to the advance of political democracy.
